After work yesterday I knew I had to go grocery shopping and just didn't feel up to it. I forced myself and pulled into the parking lot. Lots of cars...empty spot near entrance with sign...what? Expectant Mothers? Why...that's me! Suddenly I wasn't so upset about shopping...not that parking far from the store has ever really been a problem for me...it was just so nice to have that little surprise.

And where is this parking space you ask? Maceys. I rarely shop there but it is on my way home and now I'll be glad to go there...at least until October...just to have my little parking space.

Father's Day 06/23/2009

On Father's Day we had a breakfast at our place in the morning w/ Justin's sister, her husband, daughter and Justin's mom. In the afternoon we cleaned out our files and got rid of tons of unnecessary paper, which wasn't fun to do but felt so great after it was done. Right before we left for Big Cottonwood Canyon, to meet up with Justin's dad and others from the Clayton clan, it hailed here in Midvale. We thought the evening was ruined for sure but went up anyway. The weather was really nice...not even cold...until it hailed just as the fire got started. The storm passed over us in about 15 minutes and the rest of the evening was wet but nice.

Tristin made great bbq pulled pork sandwiches for everyone...This is how Matt and Justin help around the camp stove.

Dinner...yummy Jones Soda...thanks Matt (47 grams of sugar in one 12 oz. can)

It took a while to get that camp fire started so we were worried about it when the storm came in...but it lasted through all the hail.

We all scrambled to find cover...

I strategically found cover under the canopy where the graham crackers, marshmallows and chocolate were stowed. A little appetizer to the s'mores never hurt...right?

Among some of the other precious items that were my grandmother's,  my mom recently brought me two doilies. I'm assuming my grandmother made at least one of them if not both. I love looking at the handiwork but I thought I'd never use them because they're just not my style. Then I came across a beautiful wall (I can't remember where...probably a magazine or someone's craft blog) with framed doilies. All the doilies were ivory set on a black background. It just looked so modern and classy. What a perfect solution. So here is my side of the bedroom with the two doilies from my grandmother. I'm sure this isn't a new concept...framing art...but I just couldn't think anything other than the traditional use of a doily.

Picture
The doilies are set on 12x12 in. black scrapbook paper and the frames were free from my brother-in-law. Inexpensive yet meaningful and classy home decor.
Picture
This doily is on the other side of the room and comes from Brazil (Brazilian lace). My mission President's wife sent it to us as a wedding gift. It was perfectly white so I tea-stained it and now it matches the other two much better.

Yard Sale Score 06/20/2009

For some reason I decided to see what was going on at the yard sales on Saturday morning. I'm usually driving past them thinking, "I should really check those out when I have time." Well, I think I'll have to go more often. I totally scored...and I only went 3 blocks away to 1 yard sale.

$40 = 1 crib including 1 mattress, all bedding (bumper, dust ruffle, 3 fitted sheets, 1 quilt) and 2 mobiles
$46 = 17 onesies, 13 sleepers, 6 long sleeve tops, 10 pants/overalls, 5 hats, 2 sweaters, 4 blankets, 1 quilt, 3 pairs of shoes, 1 book What to Expect the First Year, 21 classic wood blocks, other random goodness
$10 = high chair

Last night Justin and I drove up to Spruces Campground up Big Cottonwood Canyon. We met up with Justin's dad, Judy, Tristin, Kenny & Kyla. Judy provided a great dinner plus brownies. Kenny took care of the fire and we just hung out chatting and eating marshmallows, cookies & hot chocolate. Justin and I had to be back home this morning but everyone else camped overnight. It was fun and it was a great reminder of how beautiful the mountains are and how close we are to them. We love living in Utah.

birthday 06/08/2009

The family got together for Justin's dad's birthday celebration on Saturday. We started off with a delicious brunch put on by Judy. The weather was perfect and we played bocce ball in the yard...then off to bowling. We had a great time.

After all the family time Justin and I drove up to Park City for the remainder of the weekend. We celebrated our 5th wedding anniversary and stayed at the Westgate Resort and Spa. Sunday it was raining but not enough to keep us from walking Main St. and having lunch. It was a great weekend.

Jessica 05/31/2009

My life-long friend, Jessica, painted these tulips and I'm so excited to finally have them in frames and on my dining room wall. Thank you Jessi.

I learned about another tradition in the Clayton family this weekend. Every year, rain or shine, on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend a trip is planned to clean the family headstones. Anyone who can make it is invited. Both Justin's dad and Judy have family there so we cleaned all the headstones with Ajax (I'd never heard of using Ajax but it does a nice job), cut back the grass around the headstone and left potted flowers. I've never met any of these ancestors and it was nice to hear the family reminisce about them.

Justin's grandfather, John, went by "Jack." We're naming our son after him, Jack,  so going to the cemetery and seeing his headstone was special for me.

Vincent visit 05/14/2009

My sister and her family came to visit last weekend. She and her husband celebrated their 10th anniversary at the Anniversary Inn while Justin and I tended the kids. They're so fun to be with and I'm glad they came. The evening they returned home and Justin and I were eating dinner alone, he said, "It's too quiet without them." We miss them.
